Fun Events To Add To Your Calendar

Anaheim Supercross – Traditionally this event is the opening round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series in California. This 16-race series features the best dirt bike riders in the world on man-made stadium tracks. Some of the top riders in the world include Americans Eli Tomac and Cooper Webb, Frenchman Marvin Musquin and German Ken Roczen.

Australian World Rally – Off-road car racing where a navigator sits in the passenger seat and gives instruction to the driver who is racing in what are called stages that last approximately 10 miles each.  Throughout the day, drivers and their co-pilots will compete in several stages that are scored by time.

Red Bud National Motocross – This form of outdoor motocross competition puts forty riders against each other in head-to-head competition on courses that are usually just over a mile in length. The riders typically race for over 30 minutes in two classes that are divided by engine size (250cc & 450cc)

Bonneville Land Speed Racing – The Salt Flats in Utah are a national treasure and several times a year they are home to motorcycle and car races where competitors try to reach the fastest speed possible in their respective class over what is called “the flying mile.” This something we highly recommend everyone add to their bucket list just because of the uniqueness.

NHRA 4-Wide Drag Racing – This unique twist in drag racing puts four 10,000-horsepower nitro- burning cars side-by-side in North Carolina.  It’s the only event of its kind and truly something to see.

NASCAR at Daytona – The granddaddy of all stock car events the Daytona 500 actually started out life as a beach race in 1948 and moved to the Daytona International Speedway in 1959.

Motorcycle Road Racing at Laguna Seca – MotoAmerica promotes the most-prestigious motorcycle road race series in the United States and the hilly course in California is famous for its mind-blowing corkscrew turn which features a massive elevation drop sandwiched between tight left-
and right-hand turns.

Shifter Kart Racing at Las Vegas – The parking lot at the famed Rio Hotel is home to the SKUSA Nationals each year. Competitors race 125cc two-stroke six-speed go karts around a temporary road course. Even the famed Formula One driver Michael Schumacher has competed in this event. My friend Billy Musgrave of Musgrave Racing Company is the four-time champ in the premiere class.

Snowshoe Grand National Cross-Country Racing – The GNCC Series is an East Coast off-road motorcycle series where competitors battle natural terrain obstacles on a 7-10 mile closed course for
approximately three hours.

FIA Formula E Long Beach, California – This relatively new form of IndyCar-type racing takes place on the streets of southern California and is quickly gaining a lot of popularity thanks to the eco- friendly power plants and impressive acceleration and overall performance.

Le Touquet Beach Race in France – This beach race is unique and draws 2000 competitors and a half-million spectators annually. It’s physically intense and brutal on equipment.

MotoGP at Circuit of the Americas – This Texas round of the series is amazing as the absolute best motorcycle racers in the world tackle on the best road courses in America.

Red Bull Air Races at Las Vegas – Pilots fly their Extra 300 aircraft around air-filled pylons that make up this course. They fly as low as 50 feet and pull massive G-forces that would cause most people to black out. Some of the top pilots include Hannes Arch, Kirby Chambliss and Michael
Goulian.

Crandon Off-Road World Championships – There are several forms of competition in this series, and our favorite is Pro2 which features 850-horsepower two-wheel-drive machines on made-made short-
course events. Some of the top drivers include Kyle LeDuc, RJ Anderson, Tanner Foust and Rodrigo Ampudia.

Baja 1000 – This truck, buggy and motorcycle race down the Mexican peninsula of Baja stretches from Ensenada to the tip in La Paz and racers usually cover the 1000-mile distance in about a day.

Idaho Snowbike National – This is a relatively new sport where dirt bikes are converted into snow machines. Our favorite race is in Idaho and is held on the grounds of the McCall public golf course.

Erzberg Enduro – This 'hard' enduro held in an old mining property in Austria is absolutely brutal on man and machine and very few motorcycle racers even finish.

IJSBA World Finals – This annual Jet Ski race in Lake Havasu City, Arizona takes place near the famed London Bridge and is world famous in the world of personal watercraft competition.

Isle of Man TT – This event is absolutely one of the most impressive to watch on television and even more impressive in person. This race was established in 1907.  Racers compete on a street race around the small town and the lap record holder is John McGuinness who stopped the clocks at 17 minutes and 3.567 seconds with an average speed of 132.701mph. Sadly, this motorcycle race is also one of the deadliest in the world which earns these competitors much respect.

Offshore Powerboat Racing in Key West, Florida – These amazing purpose-built boats achieve remarkable speed and turn with razor precision.

Speedway Motorcycle Racing in Costa Mesa, California – This form of oval racing takes place on small (185-meter-long) courses on bikes with no brakes, and no transmissions, at speeds approaching 80 mph.

Pike’s Peak Hillclimb – One of the great American races, this motorcycle and car race started in 1916 and the natural terrain course (part of which is now paved) measures 12.42 miles and the finish is at an elevation of 14,110 in Colorado.  It features 156 turns and a gain in elevation of nearly 5000 feet.

Winter X Snowmobile Racing in Aspen, Colorado – This sport is very similar to motocross except it’s done on high-performance purpose-built snowmobiles.

NAHA Hillclimb in New Plymouth, Idaho – Approximately 20,000 spectators witness this annual pro motorcycle national each year up a treacherous natural-terrain hill.  Some of the top riders in the
sport include Joe Shipman, Nick Beer, Travis Whitlock and Sammy Hummel.

Dakar Rally – This amazing endurance race began as the Paris to Dakar Rally and was moved to South America in 2009. Drivers in motorcycles, ATVs, cars, buggies and trucks compete in sections up to 550 miles per day, and the event has spanned over 6000 miles at times.

Supermoto in Denver, Colorado – This event, sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association, is a hybrid of street and dirt racing.  Racers use highly modified dirt bikes with street tires to navigate a mix of twisty tarmac and dirt jumps, whoops and corners.

24-Hours of Glen Helen – Up to 4 riders on a team compete on dirt bikes for 24 hours straight in San Bernardino, California. This an invitation only event  and it’s incredibly fun for both the participant and spectator.

Here at Off-Road Travel TV we like a lot of variety in life. We are also huge motorsports fans and probably hit a half-dozen events a year and like to mix it up. Some sports are all about speed, others style, and some finesse. So, here are our favorite forms of motorized competition, and the favorite events from each series on the calendar:
